ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

Data-driven weather forecasting

Weather radar plays a huge role in rain and flood forecasting. The challenge is to correctly calibrate radar backscatter readings against observed daily rainfall at fixed stations. This involves building a mathematical model that captures the behaviour of radar signals and translates it into daily rainfall. The workshop will explain the problem domain in greater detail and basic model-fitting techniques you can use to tune your model. The winning team will demonstrate a model that is able to correctly translate radar signals into daily rainfall at the given stations as well as undisclosed stations not given to participants

Yaozhang​

Yaozhang is currently the Data Science Lead at Shopee. She is leading the data science team working on a variety of projects to help improve user experience and optimizing ROI for the e-commerce platform. 

 

Prior to Shopee, Yaozhang was a Data Science Lead at Grab. She was also a research scientist at GreenWave Systems Inc and Institute for Infocomm Research. Yaozhang received the Ph.D. degree from Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, and the B.Eng and the M.Eng
degrees from Harbin Institute of Technology.

Samuel graduated from NUS in 2017 with a Masters in Physics. He is the lead data scientist at Terra Weather and is in-charge of the end-to-end development of AI-based predictive solutions from data manipulation to deep learning model training and deployment. 

Samuel will be the main speaker for the workshop this year. He will be touching on the problem set, gradient descent techniques as well as how to build basic data models.

Challenge for time

Working without a good sleep is expected. The challenge will require students to work within a short amount of time and apply what they have learned fast to come up with exceptional solutions.

Participants can take part in the networking session at the end of the competition to meet like-minded peers and learn more about our partner and sponsor companies.
